Health Unit Coordinator /Clinical Assistant               

This workshop trains and prepares current healthcare professionals or individuals interested in performing Health Unit Coordinators clerical duties to complete assignments at the nursing station using subject knowledge,medical terminology of the unit and judgement.Students will be able to perform great customer service skills,communicate effectively with patient's,

families and coworkers, and work independently with minimal supervision under the direction of Registered Nurse Manager.

Health Unit Coordinator (ward clerk,unit clerk,desk secretary) performs a variety of duties:

• Perform clerical duties related to admission,transfer,and discharge of patients
• Assemble patient's records and forms,complies new charts, and maintains current chart
• Maintain unit census,physician listings, and order changes
• Transcribe doctors orders
• Answer telephone and initiates emergency calls.Page doctors and other hospital personnel as needed.
• Communicate with ancillary staff( dietary,laboratory,xray departments,etc)
• Arrange physician consultations at the request of physician

This course prepares student to take the certification exam from the National Association of Health Unit Clerks.(NAHUC) For additional information on certification;visit www.nahuc.org

Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent

Working knowledge of computers and computer software

Customer Service skills
